Win Welcome to the Rileys starring Kristen Stewart on DVD

3 February 2012 9:30 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

To mark the release of Welcome to the Rileys on DVD 27th February, High Fliers have given us three copies of the movie to give away. The film is directed by Jake Scott (Ridley Scott’s son) and stars Kristen Stewart, James Gandolfini and Oscar winner Melissa Leo.

After the death of their daughter eight years ago, the lives of Doug (James Gandolfini) and Lois (Melissa Leo) Riley have been derailed. Lois refuses to leave the house and Doug strays to the waitress in his local all-night diner.

While at a business convention in New Orleans Doug unwillingly stumbles across Mallory (Kristen Stewart), a young stripper struggling to get through life. This stirs his paternal instincts once more as he tries to help build a good life for Mallory, while seeking to reclaim his marriage with Lois.

Continuing to focus on New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina, the second season of the critically-acclaimed HBO series Treme tells the colorful, interwoven stories of a group of ordinary people who endure in the midst of unthinkable loss and hardship. First Look: Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky's Francine

2 February 2012 12:10 PM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

We've been raving about this pair of filmmakers since we caught their candid, visual essay The Patron Saints at Tiff last year, and now we've got a pair of stills from Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky's feature film debut, which is set to showcase at the 2012 edition of the Berlin Film Festival. Featuring Melissa Leo in what we imagine is an atypical role for the actress, Francine (#23 in our Most Anticipated Films list for 2012) will have its U.S premiere at SXSW next March in the Emerging Visions section. This is about a woman struggling to find her place in a downtrodden lakeside town after leaving behind a life in prison. Taking a series of jobs working with animals, Francine turns away those who take an interest in her and instead seeks intimacy in the most unlikely of places. »

After over 60 separate viewings, many interviews and very little sleep, Sundance Film Festival 2012 has concluded and we’re here to bring you the best of the fest, along with our complete rundown of coverage. Many of the films below have been acquired so look for them in theaters in the coming year and stay tuned as we’ll continue to bring you updates of the best. Thanks for following and we’ll see you next year from Park City!

The Best

28 Hotel Rooms (Matt Ross) (review)

One of the most simple and most impressive films to show at this year’s Sundance, Matt Ross‘ feature debut takes a very little and squeezes a whole lot out, featuring the two strongest performances of the festival from Chris Messina and Marin Ireland. This film should inspire any filmmaker determined to make a strong feature on a shoestring budget. – Dan M.

SXSW 2012 Line-Up Helps Keep Austin Weird

1 February 2012 1:15 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

My favorite time of the year is almost here. The South by Southwest Film Festival has announced the full feature line-up for its 9-day event in Austin, and it’s another eclectic mix for a city that prides itself on weirdness.

The centerpiece film is 21 Jump Street, a comedy remake of the undercover teen cop drama from the late ’80s starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Don’t scoff just yet. The style is in the same vein as MacGruber, SXSW’s centerpiece two years ago that brought the house down. Last year, the festival hosted the female phenom Bridesmaids. Phil Lord and Chris Miller directed Jump Street and 2009’s underrated Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Johnny Depp cameos alongside Hill and Tatum and, who knows, may even appear at the premiere. He seemed to be enjoying himself here in October.

Rotterdam 2012

1 February 2012 9:49 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

We have a report or two from the International Film Festival Rotterdam on the way, so this'll be something of a supplementary roundup, collecting reviews, impressions and so on from the festival that runs through Sunday. The first main event would have to be the world premiere of the film Takashi Miike is now calling Ace Attorney. The Iffr has posted a video record of Gawie Keyser's "Big Talk" with Miike that took place on Saturday. The introduction's in Dutch, and it's followed by a trailer with English subtitles (much longer, too, than the first trailer) and the conversation itself is a mingling of questions in English and answers in Japanese with Dutch subtitles. Miike obsessives, though, will be able to sort out what's being said.

"The Iffr and Miike have been friendly towards each other ever since Audition had a few legendary screenings over here back in 2000, and it »

Navigating Our Rotterdam Premiere

31 January 2012 8:51 AM, PST | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

February is going to be a busy month. We are getting ready to premiere two new films simultaneously, one at Rotterdam the other in Berlin.

The first, The Patron Saints, is a hyperrealistic portrait of a nursing home and its inhabitants, and will have its international premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr). The second, our narrative feature Francine, a film about a recently released prison inmate with a complicated affinity for animals (played by Melissa Leo), heads to the Berlin Film Festival for its world premiere in the festival’s Forum Section.

Preparing for festivals is a lot of work for us, especially with The Patron Saints since it’s just the two of us doing almost everything. We’re like a mom and pop operation. We take on everything from web and poster design to delivering the final print and sending email invitations to industry people.

Red State DVD Review

30 January 2012 8:30 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The road to Cooper’s Dell is almost as interesting and eventful a journey as Red State itself with director Kevin Smith taking matters of distribution into his own hands and releasing the film through his own Smodcast Pictures company, something he announced in typical understated fashion at Sundance last year.

Eschewing the studio system (with which he brought us Cop Out) the freedom he enjoys bears juicy fruit as this deliberate move into new territory results in a fine horror film from the director, one which makes his promised retirement all the more disappointing. It also shows that as a director Smith knows how to let his actors lead the film, though occasionally they run too far and risk running the show into the ground, but the powerful central performance from Michael Parks anchors the film.

This is not a straight up horror film, and the film shifts gears »

Photos: Highights From The 2012 SAG Awards

30 January 2012 5:53 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Los Angeles -- Finally, an awards show with some surprises and spontaneity.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards featured some unexpected winners, including "The Help" for best overall cast performance and Jean Dujardin for best actor in "The Artist" alongside some of the longtime favorites in movies and television.

But there was a looseness and a playfulness that permeated the Shrine Exposition Center Sunday night – maybe because it was a room full of people who love to perform, without the rigidity of one single host to lead them.

Unlike the great expectations that came with the sharp-tongued Ricky Gervais' reprisal at the Golden Globes a couple weeks ago or the much-anticipated return of Billy Crystal to the Academy Awards next month, there was no master of ceremonies at the SAG Awards. The presenters and winners seemed to have more room to improvise and put their own spin on the evening – but mercifully, »

‘Predisposed’ – Jesse Eisenberg, Melissa Leo and Tracy Morgan Make For Fun Drama [Sundance 2012]

30 January 2012 5:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

One Oscar winner, an Oscar nominee and the actor who made the Egot famous simultaneously elevate the quirky family drama Predisposed. Melissa Leo plays a drug addicted mother whose son, played by Jesse Eisenberg, is forced on a madcap adventure on the most important day of his life. On his way to drop mom off at rehab, he's taken hostage by a a crazy drug dealer (Tracy Morgan), takes oxycontin, is forced to parent his little sister and even takes part in a Revolutionary War reenactment. Co-directed by first time feature director Phil Dorling and Oscar-nominated screenwriter Ron Nyswaner from their short of the same name, Predisposed is extremely ambitious and, at times, succeeds in fulfilling those promises thanks in large part to fantastic performances by the three leads. The main flaw in Predisposed is that while it tries to be a comedy first and drama second but it's actually way more dramatic than comedic. »

Plot: A piano prodigy (Jesse Eisenberg) must escort his junkie mother (Melissa Leo) to rehab, in time for him to hit his audition for a prestigious college. SAG Awards 2012: Stars Celebrate At Screen Actors Guild Awards (Photos)

29 January 2012 8:15 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Los Angeles — Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer were the maids of honor at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards, where their Deep South drama "The Help" won them acting prizes and earned the trophy for overall cast performance.

Davis won as best actress and Spencer as supporting actress for "The Help," while Jean Dujardin was named best actor for the silent film "The Artist" and Christopher Plummer took the supporting-actor award for the father-son tale "Beginners."

The wins boost the actors' prospects for the same honors at the Feb. 26 Academy Awards.

In "The Help," Davis and Spencer play black maids going public with uneasy truths about their white employers in 1960s Mississippi.

"I just have to say that the stain of racism and sexism is not just for people of color or women. It's all of our burden, all of us," Davis said, accepting the ensemble prize on behalf of her "The Help" co-stars. »

Oscar Loves Two Women. In The Same Film. Often.

27 January 2012 7:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Amir here. Since the Oscar nominations were announced on tuesday we’ve all heard tons of new stats about this year's slate. All the ‘oldest’ and ‘youngest’ and ‘most’s aside, the one thing that caught my eye was the double nomination for Best Supporting Actress for The Help’s ladies Jessica Chastain & Octavia Spencer. This is now the fourth consecutive year that the category has included two nominees from the same film. For the trivia lovers among you, this equals the previous longest streak of double supporting actress nominations from 1947 through 1950: Gentleman’s Agreement, I Remember Mama, Come to the Stable, Pinky and All About Eve... (though the earlier run is more impressive since 1949 had two sets of double nominees.)

Trivia: The two longest double supporting runs (though 47-50 actually had a year with two double noms."Pinky" is not pictured by accident. Apologies). In both one actress »
