A 12-year-old boy searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

The Buzz: A new layer has been added to the story of the Lorax vs. the Once-ler; though we're unsure at this moment how Ted, the character voiced by Zac Efron, fits into the narrative, we're looking forward to the second fully animated project from Illumination Entertainment, who impressed by turning an original idea, Despicable Me, into a worldwide hit. As the new look at the tree-protecting Lorax prepares for release, Illumination is expanding its carbon footprint to hopefully release two movies a year by 2013, when the Despicable sequel will drop.

Certificate R   -   Comedy

3 high school seniors throw a birthday party to make a name for themselves. As the night progresses, things spiral out of control as word of the party spreads.
Director:

The Buzz: It's funny that Todd Phillips co-directed the late 90s documentary Frat House with Andrew Gurland; Gurland's most recent project, The Virginity Hit was a failed shaky-cam attempt at documenting youth culture. Now it's Phillips's turn, though here he's in mentor/producer mode, with commercials director Nima Nourizadeh at the helm. And this party is being held by an older crowd of kids with (we're assuming) considerably more life experience (and better stimulants) than the YouTube virgins of last year. We're totally inviting ourselves to this event.

Working in a Boston homeless shelter, Nick Flynn re-encounters his father, a con man and self-proclaimed poet. Sensing trouble in his own life, Nick wrestles with the notion of reaching out yet again to his dad.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Themes of mental illness and father-son dynamics are so often exploited for award laurels and prestigious release strategies, so I'm encouraged to see Focus Features take a different course with Paul Weitz's adaptation of Nick Flynn's memoir. Equally auspicious is the notion that Robert De Niro might have found a role in which he can Act with a capital A. And of course we already know that Paul Dano excels when he plays the troubled son.

Certificate R   -   Comedy

Two guys get a billion dollars to make a movie, only to watch their dream run off course. In order to make the money back, they then attempt to revitalize a failing shopping mall.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: If you agree that the druggy effects of Tim and Eric's particular brand of humor are at their strongest during marathon viewings of their now-defunct cable TV show, it might be wise to keep expectations low as the guys translate to the big screen in long form. The best thing about their show was the mercifully brief run time for each episode, which yielded concentrated doses of mind altering sketch comedy; Oof course, it'll be fun to watch their movie with an audience to see who gets it, who doesn't, and who gets ill.

Based on true events, 16 year-old Jamie falls in with his mother's new boyfriend and his crowd of self-appointed neighborhood watchmen, a relationship that leads to a spree of torture and murder.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The crimes of John Bunting, Australia's most notorious serial killer, are on display in Justin Kurzel's heralded, award-winning debut. The subject matter, the love that the US press has for Australian crime dramas, and the fact that star Lucas Pittaway brings a young Heath Ledger to mind should raise the film's profile as its release date draws near. Kurzel is working on a biography of old school tennis ace Ivan Lendl as his hopeful next project.

Set on the east coast of New Zealand in the year 1984, Boy, an 11-year-old kid and devout Michael Jackson fan gets a chance to know his father, who has returned to find a bag of money he buried years ago.
Director:

The Buzz: Eagle vs Shark is one of those movies that took a while to find its audience, which includes many film writers who have given their support to Taika Waititi's follow-up, an 80s-soaked nostalgia piece that reportedly hits your emotional center and manages to find a balance between a few different genres.

Gianni is a retiree who has become invisible to most everyone around him. In response, he tries his best to generate some kind of extracurricular love life.
Director:

The Buzz: Writer-director Gianni Di Gregorio is in steady ascent: he wrote Gomorrah's screenplay and built on that international success with his directorial debut, Mid-August Lunch. So why not a semi-sequel, featuring a variation on Gianni, the character he introduced in Lunch? This time, the pensioner re-examines his relationship with women, from his mother on down.

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure | Fantasy | Sci-Fi

Transplanted to Mars, a Civil War vet discovers a lush planet inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter a princess who is in desperate need of a savior.
Director:

The Buzz: Pixar's first live-action film arrives with an interesting history: it was almost the first animated feature film ever made. Author Edgar Rice Burroughs was approached by Looney Tunes back in the 1930s to turn his novel A Princess of Mars into a movie. The deal was never struck, along came Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the rest is development hell history. Even in recent history, progress on the film version has been in fits and starts. But really isn't it promising that the project fell into Andrew Stanton's hands as his follow-up to WALL·E? And do you love this mini-trend of Pixar filmmakers going live-action?

Certificate PG-13 Comedy | Drama | Romance

A fisheries expert is approached by a consultant to help realize a sheik's vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert and embarks on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible possible.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The future of CBS Films is all question marks as their President and CEO Amy Baer departed in the wake of the studio's bombing the box office; from Extraordinary Measures to The Mechanic, no film has turned a profit on its medium sized budget. Perhaps Lasse Hallstrom's light, crowd-pleasing drama could be part of a rebuilding year that includes The Woman in Black and Gambit.

Comedy

Two best friends decide to have a child together while keeping their relationship platonic, so they can avoid the toll kids can take on romantic relationships.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: A decade after Kissing Jessica Stein, Jennifer Westfeldt's directorial debut arrives at a time when we need an antidote to celebrity-packed romantic comedies and the theme of child rearing seen from the perspective of Katherine Heigl or Jennifer Lopez's belly. Yes, of course I'm wondering what this story might've been like if Kristen Wiig were front and center, but let's not forget that Westfeldt made us realize that women are funnier than men back in 2001.

Certificate PG-13 Comedy | Drama

After stretching the truth on a deal with a spiritual guru, literary agent Jack McCall finds a Bodhi tree on his property. Its appearance holds a valuable lesson on the consequences of every word we speak.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Since this film has been in the can since 2008, for many people who cover the day-to-day of the movie industry, it represents the entirety of Eddie Murphy's career degeneration. As it stands, with Brian Robbins (Meet Dave, Norbit) at the helm, we expect to witness an intriguing concept get lost in scene after scene of bug-eyed morality comedy.

The Buzz: Elizabeth Olsen follows up her psychodramatic performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene with another troubled-lady outing; this time, the main people behind Open Water co-direct a remake of a somewhat buzzy Spanish horror film.

Certificate PG Documentary

A documentary on 85-year-old sushi master Jiro Ono, his business in the basement of a Tokyo office building, and his relationship with his son and eventual heir, Sukiyabashi.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: With a Wong Kar Wai-inspired aesthetic and a focus on a man who has spent most of his 85 years working in the restaurant industry, it's not hard to imagine David Gelb's work becoming one of the most successful documentaries of the year. The trailer is quite simply gorgeous.

Eliezer and Uriel Shkolnik are father and son as well as rival professors in Talmudic Studies. When both men learn that Eliezer will be lauded for his work, their complicated relationship reaches a new peak.

The Buzz: Joseph Cedar's Cannes-winning drama is Israel's official selection for this year's Foreign Language Oscar. Given Sony Classics' release date, it's almost as if they have insider information about the category.

Certificate R   -   Horror | Thriller

A cop investigates the case of a missing local teen, though he discovers a dark secret that has been unleashed in his town, and an evil spirit that will stop at nothing to find its heir.
Director:

The Buzz: I'm curious to know who thought it was a good idea to make the main affected teen in this found footage horror flick resemble Alex Pettyfer in Beastly. Expect a quick tour of theaters and a decent VOD run.

  -   Documentary | Biography | Music | Romance

A documentary on artist Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and his wife and collaborator, Lady Jaye, centered around the transformations the pair underwent for their Pandrogyne project.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: When Lady Jaye was alive (she passed away in 2009), she and partner Genesis P-Orridge turned their obsession with one another into an art project they called Pandrogyne, where they transformed themselves into a unified identity, a "we/us" scenario where they even dressed alike -- and fortunately they had the same shoe size. Genesis continues the project to this day as he believes his lover lives inside of him (and his career has never before flirted with this level of mainstream attention). If you're predisposed to thinking this sort of behavior is outlandish or borderline psycho, move along to the next film. If you think this expression of love is better than marriage, I'll buy your snacks and drink.

Certificate R   -   Action | Drama | Thriller

After his wife is assaulted, a husband enlists the services of a vigilante group to help him settle the score. Then he discovers they want a 'favor' from him in return.
Director:

The Buzz: One problem with Nic Cage's increasingly bizarro career choices: when he appears in a straight thriller, our fascination with him dims just a bit. Meanwhile, can we assume that co-star January Jones hasn't been cast in anything since X-Men: First Class for a reason?

  -   Comedy | Drama

When the world's media descend on the remote Scottish island where a Hollywood actress is attempting to get married, a local girl is hired as a decoy bride to put the paparazzi off the scent.
Director:

The Buzz: In the Fright Night remake, David Tennant's take on the character of Peter Vincent was sorely under-appreciated, and now he's saddled with a sadsack romantic comedy that seems like a nightmare worse than Leap Year.

Certificate R   -   Action | Comedy

A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring.
Directors:

Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Remember 1987, when Johnny Depp was a TV star with only three movie roles to his name? Now he's pulling a Jonathan Frid with a cameo appearance in the movie version of the show that brought him fame. But this is a Jonah Hill initiative all the way, one of two remakes he pushed through development (the other, The Sitter, looks insipid at best -- like Spy Kids meets Date Night). Funny thing is: I like both Hill and co-star Channing Tatum in dramatic roles over action/comedies.

Certificate R Comedy

Scheming on a way to save their father's ranch, the Alvarez brothers find themselves in a war with Mexico's most feared drug lord.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Will Ferrell is experimenting with indie movies again, and this is his most promising venture for those of us who like him when his comedy is unhinged and borderline inappropriate. Funny or Die staff director Matt Piedmont is running the show here. Strange how both Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal have excelled as producers but faded somewhat as actors.

Dispatched from his basement room on an errand for his mother, slacker Jeff might discover his destiny (finally) when he spends the day with his brother as he tracks his possibly adulterous wife.

The Buzz: The best and most genuine left-handed compliment we can give to the Duplass Brothers? Studios and critics alike love their films, as do the people who actually see them, but it's not like they make money or earn Oscar nominations (yet). Perhaps that is their destiny with their latest, a brisk, day-in-the-life subtle comedy that wisely pairs Jason Segel and Ed Helms for the first time. Did you hear about the opening scene, with Segel on the can, tape recording his love for M. Night Shyamalan's Signs?

  -   Drama

A substitute teacher who drifts from classroom to classroom finds a connection to the students and teachers during his latest assignment.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Tony Kaye's latest opens in New York City, where it became the talk of the Tribeca Film Festival last year. It's definitely an ambitious love-or-hate analysis with a broader scope than the confines of the classroom. See it just for Adrien Brody's performance - that's the general consensus and even the film's detractors indicate Brody's work is some of his best. If you want more background on Kaye's real-life antics, beyond the well known American History X episode, go here.

  -   Drama

Abandoned by his father, a young boy is left in a state-run youth farm. In a random act of kindness, the town hairdresser agrees to foster him on weekends.

The Buzz: Belgium film is hot right now with Bullhead a Foreign Language Oscar nominee and Bike, the latest from the Dardenne brothers, building steady momentum since its Jury Grand Prize win at Cannes last year.

March 23

Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from the twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister's place for the latest match.
Director:

The Buzz: Fans of Suzanne Collins's novels are primed, the entire industry is watching, and those of us hurrying through the books are wondering if Gary Ross is the right person to direct and co-write this franchise starter? (Note: Ross and Collins herself discarded a screenplay by Billy Ray in favor of their own creation.)

  -   Action

A SWAT team becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers and thugs.
Director:

The Buzz: This year's Attack the Block comes from Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans, whose immersion in the Indonesia film scene yielded one of the most talked about movies from the film festival circuit in 2011. While the inevitable remake is in development, let's see if audiences buy into the hype and embrace the fighting form known as silat, which here is used to blur the line between the good guys and the bad. I love knowing the Evans wrote the script in English and had it translated for his actors, who in turn added native slang and made other dialogue adjustments.

Drama | Romance

The wife of a British Judge is caught in a self-destructive love affair with a Royal Air Force pilot.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: You have to love Rachel Weisz; she does not take the easy or obvious route to the big screen. Before Terence Davies cast her in his latest project, stage versions of Terence Rattigan's play restored its appeal to contemporary audiences. The problem has always been the difficulty of feeling anything but impatience and/or contempt for Lady Collyer, who is no heroine or friend.

March 30

Action | Adventure | Fantasy

Perseus embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, who has been targeted for capture by his traitorous son, Ares, and his brother, Hades.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Question: two years ago, didn't the first Titans installment kickstart the debate over the use of 3D? And while Perseus' first quest did fairly well worldwide, it was more accepted than beloved by fans. Confusing us more is the notion that director Jonathan Liebesman's work on Battle Los Angeles helped get him this job -- again, not exactly fan-favorite material there, either. With a revamped cast (a la G.I. Joe: Retaliation!) and a mouthful of a premise, we're hoping this second outing has the right look, feel, and epic attitude.

Certificate PG Adventure | Comedy | Drama | Fantasy

An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Two studio kingdoms dueled over their competing Snow White projects, with director Tarsem facing the unenviable task of turning around his spin on the fairy tale in under a year, besting by more than three months Snow White and the Huntsman, the more grown-up version created by Rupert Sanders. The first trailer has stunned us with what appears to be an iffy combination of forced camp and a light Disney touch. If this were a "Top Model" photo shoot, I'd be wowed, but an apparently rushed and ill-conceived fairy tale twist from the director of The Fall, I'm on the side of the early detractors, sorry.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Sport

Labeled an outcast by his brainy family, a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Michael Dowse is a legend (in Canada) for Fubar and its sequel, and here he teams up with the hockey obsessed Jay Baruchel, who co-stars and co-wrote the screenplay with Evan Goldberg (Seth Rogen's creative other half). And while Stifler will be busy promoting American Reunion as this sports comedy is released in the States, I'm wondering if he ever realized that he was making the guy version of Kansas City Bomber. Regardless, I'm way more primed for this movie than Kevin Smith's upcoming two-parter, Hit Somebody.

Certificate R   -   Horror | Thriller

Two children living in different countries are visited nightly by a faceless being who wants to take possession of them.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Nope, it's not another home-invasion thriller; instead, this is an almost great psychological horror/fairy tale from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who started off so promising with Intact before accepting the Herculean task of following up 28 Days Later... ... This is a twisty premise that's about 90% cogent; Fresnadillo and his screenwriters crib from countless horror films, though their story commits to showing horror and anxiety from a child's perspective as it cleverly plays with timelines. The main problem: you can see the twist an hour before its reveal.

Certificate R Documentary

A documentary on peer-to-peer bullying in schools across America.
Director:

The Buzz: Hopefully Lee Hirsch, last seen in theaters with Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony, will unearth some perspectives and ideas for solutions not already seen in the myriad, urgent TV specials that have covered this unfortunate topic.
